ZenFounder is one of the best podcasts out there on how entrepreneurship can affect families and relationships. ZenFounder is hosted by Dr. Sherry Walling who has a really impressive resume. Her husband is an entrepreneur and joins her quite often on the show to talk about the challenges they face. They dive into so many great topics around the ups and downs entrepreneurship brings relationships and families. What type of topics?
Sherry has interviewed many founders about their struggles with depression, and these can be very useful so you know what to watch for and are more aware of what can emerge. Not to mention the challenges you face as a spouse of an entrepreneur and your own internal struggles.
How do you maintain your relationship with everything that life throws at you? Sherry and Rob have so many great episodes of how you maintain a healthy balance of power in your relationship.
This is just a small taste of the topics available, and I strongly recommend taking a look at the big list with your podcast app. They also host couples retreats and some other cool projects.
A good friend gave me some great advice on how to get the most out of couples counseling. He told me that they use couples counseling like they do a car mechanic… If their relationship breaks down they spend a lot of time in counseling to work through it, but they also go for regular checkups. Not only does the regular checkup give you a formalized relationship check-in, but it also keeps the counselor connected to you and when a problem does come up they don’t need a lot of backgrounds to catch up. My wife and I use this strategy and find it to be very effective.
You also need to find a counselor that is a good fit for you. My wife and I wanted someone who was a bit aggressive and would get straight to the point. We wanted someone who would work through the actual arguments with us and give us the tools to do better next time. It took us a few tries to find the perfect fit, but now that we have someone we are very grateful as the counselor speaks our language and has been super helpful.
Did you find couples counseling useful? How?

Starting a new business is crazy hard, crazy stressful, and generally a shit show. The internet talks a lot about how hard this is for the entrepreneur, but they rarely talk about how hard it is for the spouse of the entrepreneur. All the stress, but none of the control…
How will it affect our marriage?
How will it affect my career?
How will it affect my passions?
How will it affect our free time?
How will it affect our kids?
How will it affect our sex life?
How will it affect our finances?
Your entrepreneur might be comfortable operating with high risk and lot of unknowns, but that isn’t always the case for those married to them…
I was listening to a podcast yesterday with the co-founder of Infusionsoft on what a nightmare the first 3 years were for him and his wife. Jump to minute 12 and listen here and you can hear the story from his perspective.
He was making about $2,500 a month, they have 4 kids, and his wife was home trying to make it all work. They are in $100,000 of debt from school and going into more debt because of the business and personal guarantees. He talks about how stressed he and his wife were, how she couldn’t believe the business would work, and so many tear-filled conversations. I recommend a listen as it is only about 10 minutes long for that part of the story.
I am guessing so.
We need more stories from your perspective…
How are you coping with the stress?
How did you have the hard conversations?
Did you stay supportive if you did?
How did you get through it?
How did it affect your kids?
When did you give up?
What would you tell someone going through it looking back?
Can you share part of your story with us? Here is how, and it will only take 7 minutes!

Hi everyone 🙂
There is a longer story to why I created this site, but the short version is that after my wife and I got married in 2014 I was able to see through her eyes how chaotic life can be when married to someone who starts and runs their own business. And, I wanted to create a place where spouses of entrepreneurs could vent, give advice, and share tips and tricks.
I got a lot of great advice from my entrepreneur friends on marriage and family, and I wanted to create something similar for the flip side of the coin :). If you are an entrepreneur or want to show your spouse, I also created a site called Entrepreneur Life, and it covers all things personal. It started as a place to collect advice on how to balance kids and marriage with starting/running a new business, but it has slowly grown to cover more topics. There is also Healthy Business Partnerships for those in a co-founder relationship.
My wife Lindsey will pop in to say hi too, and you can say hi and talk to her on the private Facebook support group for spouses of entrepreneurs if you are interested.
Enjoy, and let us know if you have any ideas for the site 🙂
